Collaborative Support for Clinical Success
Integrating Acupuncture into Your Patient Care
-
As a leader in reproductive health, you are constantly seeking innovative, evidence-based strategies to optimize patient outcomes and enhance the fertility journey. At the Tennessee Center for Reproductive Acupuncture, we share this commitment. We are dedicated to partnering with reproductive endocrinologists, OB/GYNs, and their nursing teams to provide comprehensive, integrated care that supports your patients’ success.
At the Tennessee Center for Reproductive Acupuncture, we view acupuncture as an adjunctive medical therapy, not a standalone alternative. We recognize that your patients are navigating complex pharmacological protocols. Our role is to optimize the physiological environment—improving uterine perfusion, modulating the neuroendocrine response to stress, and managing medication side effects—to ensure your primary treatment plan has the highest probability of success.
The Evidence-Based Approach to Reproductive Acupuncture
The landscape of reproductive medicine is ever-evolving, and integrative therapies are increasingly recognized for their valuable contributions. Our practice is built upon a foundation of established research demonstrating the efficacy of acupuncture in enhancing fertility treatments and addressing underlying reproductive health concerns. Key areas where acupuncture complements conventional care include:
Optimizing IVF and IUI Cycles: Meta-analyses, such as those published in the British Medical Journal (Manheimer et al., 2008), have indicated that acupuncture, particularly when administered around the time of embryo transfer, can significantly improve clinical pregnancy rates in women undergoing IVF. Our protocols are designed to:
Improve Uterine Receptivity and Hemodynamics: Promote healthy blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, which is crucial for endometrial lining development and successful implantation and can support follicle development.
Reduce Uterine Contractions: Help minimize uterine spasms post-transfer, creating a more hospitable environment for the embryo.
Mitigate Stress and Anxiety: The emotional toll of fertility treatments is immense. Acupuncture can regulate the sympathetic nervous system, reducing cortisol levels, and fostering a calmer physiological state, which indirectly supports treatment success.
Supporting Natural Conception and Pre-Conception Health: For patients pursuing natural conception or preparing for future ART cycles, acupuncture can play a vital role in:
Regulating Menstrual Cycles: Addressing irregularities such as amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, and dysmenorrhea.
Improving Ovarian Function: Supporting healthy follicular development and ovulation.
Enhancing Egg Quality: While a complex area, acupuncture may contribute to a healthier ovarian environment, potentially impacting oocyte quality.
PCOS Management: Assisting with metabolic regulation, androgen reduction, and menstrual regularity in patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
Addressing Male Factor Infertility: Acupuncture can be a valuable adjunctive therapy for male patients by:
Improving Sperm Parameters: Studies have shown potential benefits in sperm concentration, motility, and morphology.
Reducing Oxidative Stress: Protecting sperm from damage.
Our Clinical Integration Model
We understand that seamless communication and a clear understanding of treatment protocols are paramount. When you refer a patient to the Tennessee Center for Reproductive Acupuncture, you can expect:
Strict Adherence to Your Protocols: Our treatments are designed to complement, not interfere with, your prescribed medical therapies. We operate with a deep understanding of ART cycles, medication timing, and potential interactions.
Open Communication: We prioritize ongoing dialogue with your team. With patient consent, we will provide a letter including our findings and treatment plan. Additional updates available on request.
Evidence-Based Protocols: Our practitioners are highly trained in specific reproductive acupuncture protocols informed by current research and best practices in integrative reproductive medicine.
Patient-Centered Care: We provide a compassionate, supportive environment that addresses the unique emotional and physical needs of fertility patients. This added layer of support can significantly improve patient experience and adherence to treatment plans.
Beyond the Numbers: The Patient Experience
While clinical outcomes are vital, the patient's journey is equally important. Fertility treatments can be physically demanding and emotionally exhausting. Acupuncture offers:
Stress Reduction: A dedicated space for relaxation and stress relief during an otherwise demanding process.
Symptom Management: Alleviation of side effects from medications, such as bloating, headaches, or mood swings.
Empowerment: Providing patients with an active role in their health journey, fostering a sense of control and well-being.

Supporting the Perinatal Journey: Integrating Acupuncture for Prenatal & Postpartum Wellness
At the Tennessee Center for Reproductive Acupuncture, our commitment to women's health extends beyond fertility. We recognize that the journey from conception through postpartum is a continuum, often accompanied by unique physiological and emotional challenges. We are dedicated to partnering with OB/GYNs, Midwives, and Family Physicians to provide evidence-based, adjunctive acupuncture care that supports maternal well-being, optimizes pregnancy outcomes, and eases the transition into motherhood.
The Evidence-Based Approach to Perinatal Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a safe, effective, and increasingly recommended integrative therapy during pregnancy and postpartum. Its gentle, non-pharmacological approach makes it an invaluable resource for managing common discomforts and promoting recovery, often without the contraindications or side effects associated with certain medications. Key areas where acupuncture complements conventional prenatal and postpartum care include:
Prenatal Support: Managing Pregnancy Discomfort & Preparing for Birth
Pregnancy, while a joyous time, often brings a range of challenging symptoms. Acupuncture offers significant relief and support:
Nausea & Vomiting (Morning Sickness): Studies published in journals like JAMA have shown acupuncture to be an effective intervention for hyperemesis gravidarum and general morning sickness, offering an alternative to medication or alongside medication.
Musculoskeletal Pain: As the body changes, back pain, pelvic girdle pain, and sciatica are common. Acupuncture can safely alleviates these discomforts without the need for systemic analgesics.
Headaches & Migraines: For pregnant patients who cannot take certain medications, or who experience headaches in pregnancy, acupuncture provides a drug-free option for headache management.
Fatigue & Insomnia: By regulating the nervous system and promoting relaxation, acupuncture can significantly improve energy levels and sleep quality.
Stress Management: For many, stress is very high during pregnancy. We provide a Non-pharmacological intervention for stress relief.
Metabolic & Vascular Regulation: Beyond symptom relief, we provide evidence-based support for high-risk concerns. Our protocols focus on improving insulin sensitivity to aid in the management of Gestational Diabetes and enhancing placental perfusionto support healthy blood pressure and fetal growth—optimizing your body’s internal environment.
Breech Presentation: Acupuncture, often combined with moxibustion, has a well-documented success rate in encouraging cephalic version, with treatment typically done between 32-36 weeks gestation.
Labor Preparation: Optimizing the Transition to Birth: As a patient approaches their estimated due date (EDD), the clinical goal shifts toward encouraging the natural onset of labor and ensuring the body is physiologically "ready" for the demands of childbirth.
Our Pre-birth protocols (typically beginning at 36 weeks) focus on:
Cervical Ripening & The Bishop Score: Clinical research, including recent studies from 2024 and 2025, indicates that acupuncture can significantly improve cervical readiness. By promoting the softening and thinning of the cervix, we help move patients toward a more favorable Bishop Score. This is particularly beneficial for patients with a planned medical induction, as a "ripe" cervix is one of the strongest predictors of a successful vaginal delivery.
Encouraging Spontaneous Labor Onset: For patients reaching 40+ weeks, specialized acupuncture protocols can help nudge the body into spontaneous labor. A 2024 randomized controlled trial (the ACUPUNT study) found that women receiving targeted acupuncture sessions prior to a scheduled medical induction had a 65.1% rate of spontaneous labor onset, compared to 39.6% in the control group
Reducing the "Time-to-Birth" Gap: By supporting the release of endogenous oxytocin and prostaglandins, acupuncture can help decrease the time between the due date and the actual onset of active labor, potentially reducing the need for post-dates medical inductions.
Anxiety & Autonomic Regulation: The "waiting game" of the final weeks of pregnancy often triggers a significant stress response. By down-regulating the sympathetic nervous system, we help the patient enter labor in a state of "rest and digest," which is the optimal physiological environment for effective uterine contractions.
Postpartum Recovery: Healing & Harmonizing After Birth
The postpartum period is a critical phase of recovery and adjustment. Acupuncture can play a vital role in supporting the mother's physical and emotional healing:
Postpartum Pain & Healing: Addressing pain from perineal tears, C-section recovery, and musculoskeletal strain from breastfeeding or carrying the infant.
Lactation Support: Acupuncture can assist the work of lactation consultants with insufficient lactation (galactopoiesis) or helping to establish and maintain a healthy milk supply.
Postpartum Depression & Anxiety (PPD/PPA): A significant number of new mothers experience mood disorders. Acupuncture offers a non-pharmacological, gentle intervention to balance mood, reduce anxiety, and support emotional well-being, working alongisde with counseling and other treatments.
Fatigue & Exhaustion: Replenishing energy and supporting the body's recovery from the demands of childbirth and sleepless nights.

We provide informed consent by detailing the acupuncture process, possible side effects/risks, and our specific treatment plan. We also allow ample time for patient questions, as many of our patients have never had acupuncture before.
Needling Technique: We use ultra-fine, sterile single-use needles (36–40 gauge). Our needling technique is exceptionally gentle; most patients experience little to no sensation and many fall asleep. We have extensive experience managing needle fears and other issues.
Point Location: Most acupuncture points we use are from the knees down, the elbows down, abdomen around the navel, and back. They all have precise locations around anatomical landmarks. Points are chosen based on cycle timing, pregnancy dating, patient constitution, main complaint, etc.
Additional Modalities: We frequently utilize Electro-stimulation (e-stim) at specific frequencies to improve uterine hemodynamics and hormone regulation, as supported by the Stener-Victorin and Magarelli models.
Safety & Monitoring: Patients are modestly draped, as needed, and provided with a call button. We check in at least once during the 20–30 minute retention period. All needles are double-counted upon removal and disposed of in medical sharps containers.
